Just when you thought the last thing the world needed was another book on weeknight cooking, along comes an entirely fresh take on the subject. As they do on their weekly show, host Lynne Rossetto Kasper and producer Sally Swift approach their topic with attitude and originality, making The Splendid Table’s How to Eat Supper one of the most engaging cookbooks of this or any other year.
As loyal listeners know, Lynne and Sally share an unrelenting curiosity about everything to do with food. Their show, The Splendid Table, looks at the role food plays in our lives—inspiring us, making us laugh, nourishing us, and opening us up to the world around us. Now they have compiled all the most trenchant tips, never-fail recipes, and everyday culinary know-how from the program in How to Eat Supper, a kitchen companion unlike any other.
This is no mere cookbook. Like the show, this book goes far beyond the recipe, introducing the people and stories that are shaping America’s changing sense of food. We don’t eat, shop, or cook as we used to. Our relationship with food has intensified, become more controversial, richer, more pleasurable, and sometimes more puzzling. How to Eat Supper gives voice to rarely heard perspectives on food—from the quirky to the political, from the grassroots to the scholarly, from the highbrow to the humble—and shows the essential role breaking bread together plays in our world.
How to Eat Supper takes you through a plethora of inviting recipes simple enough to ensure success even if you’ve never cooked before. And if you are experienced in the kitchen, you’ll find challenging new concepts and dishes to spark your imagination.

Customer Rating: Summary: As good as the show! Comment: I got this book for my husband's birthday and it's as wonderfully delicious as the show. We listen every week to Lynn's great show and wait for her stories and recipes. Now we can have Lynn in our house anytime we want, day or night!
Customer Rating: Summary: A great gift - for yourself or someone else. Comment: My brother-in-law is a magnificent home cook. He's also a tough to impress and very much a critic of food writing (since he consumes so much of it in his quest for perfect new recipes), so I wasn't too sure if this book would work for him or if he'd just cast it aside.
Since he cooks for us so much, I bought this for him as a thank you. I am so glad I did. He made us the macaroni right of the bat. It was amazing. He then called me a few days later to tell me that he was now 4 recipes into it, and each one had been fabulous.
I love Lynne's radio show, so I am delighted that this book is a success for her and is so well-reviewed here. She deserves it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Horrible Graphic Design Comment: I love the Splendid Table show, and listen each week. I was looking forward to the recipes in this book. However the graphic design is so overwhelming and distracting that I couldn't even FIND the recipe on most pages. There are huge quotes and unrelated tips on every page, in colors and font sizes which completely overwhelm the actual content of what is, after all, a cookbook. Every time I opened the book I felt assaulted and confused, and closed it without learning anything about how to cook dinner, or anything else. I borrowed the book from the library to see if it was worth buying, and have decided that no, it isn't.
Customer Rating: Summary: one of the best Comment: I have been reading cook books and cooking for over 63 years - this book is filled with fresh new cooking tips and recipes. I am still learning. Usually, after purchasing a cookbook, I am disappointed and, if I am lucky find maybe one good recipe.
Customer Rating: Summary: Yum Comment: This is a cookbook that reads more like a novel then a list of ingredients. Its a wonderful and fun concept. The recipes are great. I'll never buy salad dressings again after seeing how easy they are to make.
