Editorial Reviews:

A revolutionary new low-carb diet for diabetics by the doctor who pioneered a successful new approach to the disease--with 100 original mouth watering recipes. For diabetics, diet is more than a lifestyle choice--it*s the key to controlling the course of their disease. Many diabetics struggle their entire lives to maintain a healthy weight, but the guidelines given to them by the American Diabetes Association have proven unhelpful in regulating blood sugar--the critical component in keeping diabetes in check. In THE DIABETES DIET, Dr. Bernstein serves up the groundbreaking low-carbohydrate approach to diabetes care that has enabled his patients to take control of their disease by regulating their blood sugar without the usual swings. Dr. Bernstein himself is living proof of the success of this method, and he has the science to back it up. Plunging into the current debate on low-fat vs. low-carb diets, he shows that, especially for diabetics, low-carb is what will change lives--and he offers 100 delicious all-new recipes to help keep diabetics on track for life. The recipes and advice in THE DIABETES DIET will provide readers with an easy-to-follow guide for controlling their disease and regaining their health and well-being. * There are an estimated 18 million diabetics in America, and their number is increasing every year--yet there are no low-carb diet books appropriate for diabetics. * Since publication in 1997, Dr. Bernstein*s Diabetes Solution and its revised 2003 edition have sold more than 120,000 copies. * An engineer by training, Bernstein pioneered blood glucose self-monitoring and the tight control of blood sugar that is now accepted as the standard treatment of diabetes. He entered medical school at the age of 45 in order to publish his findings.

Summary: Impossible diet to follow
Comment: I commend the author for faithfully following the diet he prescribes in this book- but for the vast majority of people this diet is impossible to follow. He suggests an extremely low-carbohydrate diet, even more so than the south beach diet or the atkins diet. He says to follow a 12-6-6 diet, 12 grams of carbs for breakfast, and 6 grams for both lunch and dinner. I was hopeful that this book would give me a diet to follow, but his diet was just too strict, he doesn't even allow for milk- instead he has you use a little cream mixed into water! ick! I'm sure his diet of protein and vegetables would make anyone lose weight and be very healthy, but for the average person it is just not realistic to think that you can go through the rest of your life cutting out all carbs.

Summary: Looks hard to live with
Comment: I am sure that if a person could actually live with this diet plan, not only would he/she lose weight, but blood sugars would be in complete control. There are too few choices in acceptable foods and too many no-nos. It is similar to Phase One of South Beach Diet, which is doable for two weeks but too strict for the long haul.

Summary: Weird and disappointing
Comment: I bought this book before I learned how off-base Dr. Berstein is in the area of disbetes treatment. His suggestions are ultra low-carb and I believe dangerously low. If you are looking for a good reference on type-2 diabetes and how to treat I would NOT recommend this book. Try a publication from Joslin Diabetes Center.

Summary: Just what the doctor ordered!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment: This is a must read book for diabetics. I have always felt that a low carb diet works best for diabetics. Dr. Bernstein also recommends exercise. This is a must read.

Summary: The Diabetes Diet
Comment: I had previously been referred to a nutritionist and been given a low fat, low cholesterol, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable, whole grain type of diet. It evidently didn't work. Granted that I am now on a low dose of Metformin which my system has handled pretty well, but I am now testing consistently in the low 100's, sometimes lower, following the adoption of Dr. Bernstein's carb eliminaton diet. While I do make some exceptions, especially when travelling, I try to follow it strictly at home. The toughest part is breakfast. Forget everything you have previously been told. Fresh fruit - out, Oatmeeal - out, Low sodium vegetable juice - out, Whole grain cereals with fat free milk - out. Eggs - in. But it seems to be working. Lunch and dinner suggestions are easier to follow. The book does a good job explaining why the diet works. The price was less expensive and the information better than another fruitless trip to the nutritionist.
