James Conaway's remarkable bestseller delves into the heart of California's lush and verdant Napa Valley, also known as America's Eden. Long the source of succulent grapes and singular wines, this region is also the setting for the remarkable true saga of the personalities behind the winemaking empires. This is the story of Gallos and Mondavis, of fortunes made and lost, of dynasties and destinies. In this delightful, full-bodied social history, James Conaway charts the rise of a new aristocracy and, in so doing, chronicles the collective ripening of the American dream. More than a wine book, Napa is a must-read for anyone interested in our country's obsession with money, land, power, and prestige.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good read. Comment: A real page turner. If you are interested in the Napa story and
wine this is for you.
Customer Rating: Summary: A wonderful book... Comment: ....filled with the history of the place and how it got to be what it is today. Lots of characters live in this book and the story is well-told and most times, fascinating. Nightmare in Napa: The Wine Country Murders (48 Hours Mystery)
Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing historical account of one of the most romantic regions of the United States Comment: This is an amazing social history of U.S. Wine Country. I bought the book on my way to Napa for the first time and it was fascinating to read about the early days of the wineries my husband and I toured: Mondavi, Niebaum and others.
Customer Rating: Summary: Reads like a novel Comment: This is a very interesting and informative read about Napa that includes all the rich history, progess and hurdles, and sometimes scandal that contributed to what the Napa Valley is today. The book is written in such a way that it's almost more like a fiction novel but there's so much information packed into the pages, it truly is a history book of Napa. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to any and all "wine geeks".......
Customer Rating: Summary: In Conaway, Veritas... Comment: This is a masterful narrative, of interest to enophiles, wine drinkers, travellers, and cultural historians, too. Compelling personal stories, enough details about the challenges and processes of the business, and a good sense of the times in which these pioneers found themselves add up to a wonderful page turner. Read this before your first visit to Napa and your experience will be all the more wonderful...and you'll know why, for example, it's "Neibaum-Coppola" and not just "Coppola."
