Since its 1990 publication, Rose's Christmas Cookies has been a phenomenal success. Who can resist Chocolate-Dipped Melting Moments Cookies or moist Mini-Cheesecakes with Lemon Curd . . . or David Shamah's Jumbles, a fabulous cross between a chocolate-chip cookie and a chunky candy bar bursting with raisins, chocolate chips, and pecans. Whether you need a cookie to decorate your tree or grace your mantelpiece (cookies like Stained Glass or Christmas Wreaths), a sweet to send (Mahogany Butter Crunch Toffee, Maple Macadamia Bars), or a special holiday treat for your dinner party (Praline Truffle Cups, Chocolate-Pistachio Marzipan Spirals), you'll find that perfect something here. Complete with 60 cookie recipes and a color photograph of each cookie for handy reference, this easy-to-use and fun-to-read book will result in scrumptious, festive, and splendid-looking cookies every time.

Customer Rating: Summary: Anytime Cookies Comment: Rose Levy Beranbaum is one of my favorite cookbook writers, because she is unwaveringly precise. Her recipes are almost foolproof, provided that you follow her instructions and don't make too many ingredient substitutions. She's a little [...] in her quest for perfection, but I'd trust her tested, detail-heavy recipes any day over recipes where I can't be sure that things will turn out right (or even be edible) the first time.
Although the title reads "Christmas Cookies," most of the recipes are for "anytime cookies." The book focuses on classics (lemon bars, gingerbread people, meringues, mexican wedding cookies, biscotti, rugelach) and has a chapter dedicated to cookies that survive shipment well.
Out of the recipes I've tried, my favorite is the Peanut Butter and Jelly Jewels, which have a wonderful sandy texture when you bite into them. The warm flavor of peanut butter is balanced with tart jam or creamy chocolate, depending on your preference. (Personally, I choose the Reese's combination every time I make it.) The lemon bars are also especially good.
Most recipes will be easy enough for the casual baker, but there is one recipe, the Gingerbread Cathedral (p. 186-187 - check out the picture!) that I don't think I'll ever be ambitious enough to attempt. The cathedral design features "stained glass" candy windows and flying buttresses!
Also included is a homemade dog biscuits recipe so your favorite canine doesn't feel left out.
Customer Rating: Summary: Roses Christmas Cookies Review Comment: A very well illustrated book with delicious and easy to follow recipes. Rose covers everything in this book from storage to shelf life and lots of handy tips. The recipes are great , fun to make and delicious, I thoroughly recommend this book for amateur cooks to professionals.
Customer Rating: Summary: Baking Fan Comment: Wow!Wow! It's excellent, with conversions, recommendations, nice pictures, etc., everyone should have one copy of it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Cookies Comment: I ordered this book because my sister and I along with a few daughters hold a marathon cookie baking weekend in December. We then give away cookie trays to family and friends. All of the reciepes we used from this book were great tasting, and recieved high reviews from our test tasters (husband and friends). Good book for any cookie making adventurer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not ordinary cookies Comment: I haven't yet attempted any of the recipes in this book yet, but I have looked through it. There seems to be a lot of unique and little known cookies. Some of the recipes seem quite complex. I would not recommend this for someone that just wants a good compilation of easy Christmas cookies. There are quite a lot of ethnic recipes that might be good for surprising grandma or grandpa with something they haven't had in quite a while.
