Customer Rating: Summary: Buying this for a pastry chef Comment: I purchased this book years ago at a book sale for charity. I bought it for the cookie recipes and was surprised to find all the Libby's pumpkin recipes. Whenever I bake for the holiday I get rave reviews form the family. I am now purchasing the book for my sister-in-law who is a pasty chef. She loves everything I have made form this book. She recently asked me to get her a copy of the book if I ever see it again. Coming from her that means a lot because of how particular she is and how many cook books she already owns.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best Chunky Cookie Book -- Hands Down Comment: I say best "chunky" cookie book, because this collection doesn't include many delicate items -- and that's fine by me. Chunky cookies rock. As a summer camp baker, I look for recipes that are kid-friendly, and easily expanded to camp proportions. It's always a bonus when the recipes are so well-tested that I don't have to change a thing. And that is what I've found in this book -- every recipe I've tried tastes perfect, and looks just like the photo in the book.
An earlier reviewer suggested that this book is just a platform to sell Nestle products, but you will find that in any "brand name" cookbook. Very few companies make a product that can't be replaced by a less-expensive store brand version.
As for the awesomely wide range of recipes using canned pumpkin -- terrific! After I make pumpkin pie at camp, I still have half a case of #10-size cans to use; the pumpkin cookie recipes in the book are delicious -- always gobbled up. Ditto for the recipes focusing on condensed milk, coconut, and cranberries.
I couldn't recommend this book more highly!
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice collection, but too much pumpkin! Comment: There's nothing actually wrong with the cookie recipes in the book. However, they're hardly what I'd consider the all-time greatest cookie recipes ever, anywhere. The book is a big promotional piece for Nestle products -- I suppose that explains the presence of more pumpkin recipes than anyone could ever use. Also, the brandy snap recipe is line-for-line identical to the one in _The Joy of Cooking_, so I wonder where else some of the recipes originally came from. I didn't buy this for myself, and I'm glad that I didn't -- I have better things to spend my money on.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nestle Toll House Best Ever Cookies Comment: Oh boy is this a dangerous book to have on hand if you are planning on dieting! The cookie recipes in this book just sound delicious - almost every recipe sounds worth baking (I have only made one recipe so far and it came out great). There are a many pictures but they put several cookie pictures on one page, there is not a picture next to each recipe. There is a chapter on brownies, a chapter for christmas cookies, to name a couple - just page after page of mouth-watering cookie recipes using some new twists on old favorites as well as including the traditional favorites. There is also a bunch of recipes for things other than cookies - some pies, breads, etc. I can tell that this is going to become one of those tried and true favorite books that you always refer to when you are looking for that perfect recipe - easy to prepare and always tastes wonderful.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent recipes for gifts Comment: I love to bake cookies and have won blue ribbons at the Del Mar Fair here in San Diego. There are many new recipes in this book to try and new ideas for Christmas gifts. I make cookie jars and fill them for gifts. The pictures are great and the recipes easy to follow. Perhaps with all these new recipes I will find a good entry for the fair. I look forward to trying many of the recipes.
