Customer Rating: Summary: Low-Carb No-Way Comment: I purchased this book in hopes of reducing my carb intake, but like many of the other unsatisfied consumers I was left with only a few recipes. The book claims the dieter will have a choice of more than two hundred tasty recipes with low carbs. The real estimate is closer to fifty. Slow cook recipes can be a great way to cook if you don't have much time, like me, but this cookbook fails when it comes to meeting my low-carb needs.
What you will get:
* Tips for eating a healthful, low-carb diet.
* At-a-glance carb counts for every recipe.
* Reference list of carb counts for fruits and vegetables.
* More than two hundred recipes for appetizers, snacks, beverages, main dishes, and soups,
* A bonus chapter of quick side dishes.
There are some very tasty recipes (but you'd expect that from BH&G) that do offer carb counts under twenty, but there are also many recipes that go well above twenty in carb counts. If this book was packaged differently, you'd have a very useable slow cook cookbook, but marketed as a low-carb solution, it can't live up to its claim.
Customer Rating: Summary: Decent recipes, if not so very low-carb Comment: I've made a number of these recipes; they tend to be very easy and for the most part pretty tasty. Many of them are not *very* low carb; I don't entirely know why the book is called that, but if you just want some nice, easy crock pot recipes (my main goal) then I think the book is great. If you need to be on a specifically low-carb diet, many of these recipes will not fit the bill.
Customer Rating: Summary: Moderate-Carb Slow Cooker Comment: This is definitely not a low carb cook book, perhaps a moderate carb cook book but even still there are a lot well, almost all of the recipes that make a stew or soup have white potatoes in them. Not for the Atkins diet or the induction of the South Beach, I liked some of the ideas but often felt myself substituting the potatoes for sweet potatoes, turnips or cauliflower.
Customer Rating: Summary: They taste great. Comment: So far all the recipes have been great. Although I find that almost every recipe I've tried has onions in them. But no complaints.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not perfect but still a good book to own. Comment: This book has some great-tasing recipes, which is the number 1 thing I look for. Are all of them perfectly low carb? No--and that's why it loses a full star.
However, the beginning of the book has an excellent summary of what it means to be on a low-carb diet. The recipes do give you things live whole wheat spaghetti as a possible side, but you should use your discretion of course. While whole wheat anything is not strictly low carb, due to the high fiber content there are certainly much worse things you can eat. (In other words, there aren't many people who got fat eating high-fiber foods.)
My favorites from this book are the beef stroganoff and the Irish stew.
