Many of us long to escape the dreariness of our daily lives for the balmy weather, fresh air, and bright sunshine of the world’s islands—those almost magical places whose distance from the mainland has the power to distance us from our normal cares. Island Wise transports you to these far-off shores to reveal what makes island life so appealing—and shows you how to invoke the inimitable island sense of tranquility, simplicity and joie de vivre every day.
From the Bahamas to Prince Edward Island, Canada, author Janis Frawley-Holler explores twenty-five of the world’s most beguiling islands, introducing the natural wonders, ancient traditions, musical rhythms, and everyday practices that make each seaborne locale utterly unique. Her charming vignettes also share each culture’s simple recipes for leading life at a slower pace, focusing on what really matters, charting your heart’s desires, enriching personal relationships, and cultivating a deep sense of purpose and meaning. Whether you’re dreaming of an island getaway or looking to retain your post-vacation glow, Island Wise proves that “island-wise” living is not about location—it’s simply a state of mind that makes life sweeter wherever you are.

Customer Rating: Summary: Island Wise Comment: Island people know the true gifts of a fulfilled life. This little book packs powerful insights into lives well spent. It is SO much more than a travel guide! I loved it, so I must be an island girl at heart.
Customer Rating: Summary: Peaceful Reading for the Beach Comment: I bought a copy of this book at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego and read it while vacationing there. I found it to be extremely relaxing and informative about the various islands, most of which I have not visited. When I returned home to Mississippi, I ordered a copy for my sister and one for my friend in Alabama. I loved it!
Customer Rating: Summary: Few snippets here and there. Comment: There are just few pages about every island, from very north to very south of the globe. Just a few new or interesting facts about any of them. You are not going to learn anything about beaches on St. Lucia, or night bars in Cuba. I am not sure author ever went to those islands.
Customer Rating: Summary: Lessons in Living Comment: Light, easy reading. Good for that time right before falling asleep in bed because the islands and people Janis Frawley describes are sunny and happy and relaxed and the advice she gives is good and hopeful. It makes for some good dreaming.
(Only one negative- the author overuses the word "venerable").
Customer Rating: Summary: Island Inspired Philosophy Comment: The author lovingly describes 25 islands as varied as Nassau, Crete, Chincoteague, or Cuba. She summarizes the lifestyle and spirit that is unique to each. From that summary, she then highlights three key points that can be adopted into the reader's life.
For example, for Key West she advises us to "Create your own style." and for an island in the Azores she says "Celebrate everything!" For each of these she gives examples of integrating the "lesson for living" into your life.
I think photos of the islands would enhance the book for readers, but it is very plain with some grey shading and the lessons set off by simple stars.
