Since 1988, Rebar Modern Food has been Victoria's favorite restaurant and juice bar, featuring fresh, healthy, predominantly vegetarian fare. The upbeat atmosphere and vibrant, tasty food have led critics to describe Rebar as "inventive," "hip," and "visionary." The Rebar Modern Food Cookbook can be used by everyone-strict vegans, vegetarians (full and part-time!), and anyone looking for delicious ideas with a funky twist. Recipes range from salads to pastas, entrées, lunch and brunch ideas, soups, sandwiches, side dishes, sweets, and juices. The book also offers handy tips, menu ideas, seasonal substitutions, and suggestions for transforming dishes into low-fat or vegan alternatives. Everyone who loves to cook and eat delicious, healthy, fun food will welcome this much-anticipated book!

Customer Rating: Summary: love it! Comment: I love this cookbook. After cooking from it for about a year and a half, it is definitely my "go to" cookbook whenever I'm looking to make a special meal. It has turned me on to so many new flavors and has influenced me to try combining flavors in interesting and unexpected ways. My favorite recipes are the cilantro pesto, the rosemary garlic foccacia, the white bean hummos with sage, Monk's curry with homemade curry paste, and the lime pepita sugar cookies. Some of the recipes are quite labor-intensive, but definitely worth it for the great food. I'm planning a trip to Victoria for the sole purpose of going to the Rebar restaurant!
Customer Rating: Summary: Truly a winner Comment: I bought this book after it was mentioned on Mark Bittman's blog (Bitten~ 3/19/08) as one of the books to have on your cookbook shelf. Having been a vegetarian for over a decade I already have plenty of vegetarian cookbooks on my shelf but this one quickly has become my favorite. I have made at least 15 items out of the book. The recipes are innovative and combine flavors in a way that really appeals to my family and me. Some of the recipes do take longer, especially those that require that one makes a "mother sauce" or two before hand but I have yet to make a single thing that we didn't really like. Many recipes have an Asian or Southwestern influence.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rebar reinvigorates !! Comment: I have wanted this book for years and it does not disappoint. The first soup I tried (Greek Red lentil) was an absolute hit, even with my meat loving partner ! It has reinvigorated our cooking.
Customer Rating: Summary: Delightfully Different Comment: This is one of my favorite cookbooks!! I love the fusion behind many of their recipes. I also hold any cookbook in high regard when it emphasizes making most everything from scratch...even tortillas!!!! This cookbook has a great section just for basics that will start any cook off to a good start.
A few points, however, that not all of the recipes I think are to the correct amounts. I do not mind this so much as it only takes a bit of "tinkering". Also, for those who do not live in an area where you have access to an excellent natural foods market, you might be limited on a few of the recipes. I still, however, think it is worth it to have this cookbook.
Customer Rating: Summary: My "Must Have" Cookbook. Comment: I love this cookbook. The recipes are inspired and fresh, and each one hsa been fantastic. I particularly recommend 'African Yam and Peanut Soup' and the 'Quinoa Corn Salad'. Both are fantastic and have been made many times in my kitchen!
