Tofu, setian, tempeh, tofu, seitan, tempeh.... it seems like so many vegans rely on these products as meat substitutes. Isn't it time to break out of the mold? Taking a fresh, bold, and alternative approach to vegan cooking without the substitutes, Dino Sarma brings you over 100 fully vegan recipes, many of which draw from his South Asian roots. Sharing his jazz-style approach to cooking, Dino also discusses how you can improvise in your own cooking with simple ingredients and how you can stock your kitchen to prepare simple and delicious vegan meals quickly. Whether you love tofu, seitan, and tempeh or hate it, Alternative Vegan shows you how to let the favor shine through by cooking simply with fresh ingredients. One pot meals, and big salads; basic broccolo, demonic mushrooms and Asian roasted potatoes; international dishes such as Pakoras, Flautas, Bajji, and Kashmiri Biriyani; simple snacks and appetizers like hummus canapes and no-cheese pizzas; drinks and desserts using fresh fruits: pomegranate and wine slushy, poached pears in mulled wine, jackfruit granite....and a whole lot more!

Customer Rating: Summary: Imagine... Comment: Imagine a cook book that cuts right to the chase: easy to create, nourishing food that is made for sharing. This a cookbook for everyone who wants to make dining a simple, beautiful gesture of love for others, love for self, and love for Earth. The recipes introduce ideas and techniques that can be used as a springboard to innovation. My favorites: Comforter, Curried Plantains, Banana Bread, Wintermelon Soup. Buy this book for youself, buy it for your friends (vegan or not), just buy it and head to the kitchen!
Customer Rating: Summary: Best cookbook ever Comment: Wonderful recipes and very understandable instructions. Shop from the produce section, go home and create a feast that no omnivore could find fault with. The best!
Customer Rating: Summary: Prepare for an Adventure in the kitchen Comment: Here's what I love about Dino Sarna's Alternative Vegan - everything. Seriously, Dino's voice comes through in the most unostentatious and entertaining way as he coaches me to make changes, take risks, use what I have, not trip to the grocery for some obscure ingredient. Got this but not that? Use what you have. Can't afford top of the line cookware? Join the club and get yourself some used stuff at a thrift store. Good food will result all the same.
Taking the theory Sarna provides and running with it has filled my home with spicy aromas, healthy meals, and a great deal of satisfaction. It's almost like Dino Sarna is standing behind me as I cook, shaking his head in approval, providing a guiding hand when needed.
This is way more than a collection of recipes. This is a collection of wisdom about the chemistry of food passed down from generations of Sarna's family. It's worth the price and then some. Get your copy. You will not regret it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Incredible!! A must have!! Comment: I would suggest that anyone on a vegan diet or just wishing to explore exotic cooking get this cookbook. This book focuses on vegan eating without all the soy-based prepacked "fake foods". Dino's writing is entertaining and will help relax you and make cooking a pleasure. All the recipes I have tried have been delicious.
Customer Rating: Summary: Generally easy and good recipes Comment: If you've been frustrated by trying to find ingredients for vegan cooking at your local store, this can help. And so far, the recipes are good. I especially liked the black olive hummus with truffle oil. The banana bread wasn't quite as successful, but my bananas weren't ripe enough so that may have been part of the problem.
