Customer Rating: Summary: recipes are a guessing game Comment: I LOVE to bake and am very good at it. But apparently the recipes in this book are only for experienced biscuit makers! I suppose they want you to "guess" how to make them as they are NOT the exact measurements of ingredients and the instructions must have mistakes everywhere...for example, one biscuit recipe calls for 1 CUP of half-half, then tells you in the instructions to only use 1/2 Cup half-half, then nowhere later in the recipe is there any other use for the rest of it...and at that stage, if you followed to only include the 1/2 cup instead of full cup, then your dough does not turn out correctly..I even tried the recipe 3 times in a row one afternoon because I was so aggravated with it....are they setting you up for failure so that their beloved biscuit recipes are not copied exactly? I certainly would never purchase this book unless you are ready to "tweak" everything you make!
Customer Rating: Summary: The Crossroad Cafe -- a novel about biscuits Comment: The subject of good biscuits is dear to my heart -- as a native Southerner I've watched the elder women in my family fold, knead and pinch flaky biscuits to perfection since I was old enough to know the difference between lard and Crisco. What a wonderful book and documentary! My latest novel, The Crossroads Cafe, has a strong biscuit theme (laugh) and I've done a lot of research on southern biscuits as a result. Maryann Byrd's work is a true delight!
