Editorial Reviews:

Imagine a kitchen warm witih the smells of sweet vanilla, fragrant cinnamon, and fresh butter. On the kitchen counter is a cooling rack piled high with fresh-from-the-oven delights filled with chocolate chips and crunchy pecans. Ah, the age-old comfort of cookies.

Next imagine that each of the yummy treats began with a convenient box of cake mix. That's right, a standard 18.25-ounce box of cake mix is the secret to some of the tastiest, simplest, and most irresistable cookies imaginable. With a few extra ingredients, turns of a spoon, and whirrs of a mixer, cake mix can make anyone a prize cookie baker.

Like Cookie Dough Delights and Brownie Mix Bliss, Cake-Mix Cookies is the first cookbook of its kind. Although several cake-mix cookbooks exist, including the bestselling Cake Mix Doctor books and 101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix, they offer only a small number of cookie and bar recipes and overlap one another.

By contrast, Cake-Mix Cookies is filled with an array of more than 175 drop, shaped, filled, and bar cookie options for every occasion. Numerous all-American favorites are used as starting points: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, jam thumbprints, and dark chocolate brownies. There are also new takes on classic European cookies; for example, crunchy Italian biscotti, tender French madeleines, and rich Viennese teacakes. Finally, a healthy dose of new cookies has been created for the book: blackberry-lemon buttermilk bars, triple chocolate chess squares, and chocolate blackout.

Cake-Mix Cookies contains the broadest range of new recipes for cookies and bars that is unavailable elsewhere. And while it capitalizes on the popularity of baking with cake mixes, it has its own unique niche on the home cook's shelf.

Summary: Good for inspiration
Comment: The recipes in this book are good for inspiration, as far as flavor combinations (spices, fruits) you can add to your own cookie recipes to jazz them up a bit. It would have been far more useful had it been organized by flavor of cake mix (chocolate, spice, yellow, etc.), rather than type of cookie (bar, drop, etc.).

However, be forewarned, these recipes take an already relatively unhealthy product (cake mix), and make it much worse, with added butter, sweetened condensed milk, and sugar in most of the recipes.

When you make your own cookies from scratch, you have much more control over what you put in them, and can avoid the artificial ingredients found in mixes. Also, not only is cake mix expensive, it takes up a lot of room in your pantry that could be better used for other food items.

Bottom line: Unless you are getting cake mix dirt cheap, this is a very expensive way to make cookies that quite honestly won't taste as good as homemade. If you have a lot of cake mixes to use up, you might see some recipes you like, but it really isn't any more work to make a good from scratch recipe.

Summary: Cake Mix Is For...Cakes
Comment: I am a cookbook collector and I rarely hate a cookbook. This is the exception. I am not a baker, but needed to make lots of cookies recently and browsed Amazon and found this and hoped it would make life easier. The recipes are just terrible and I have made quite a few of them. Most ended in the garbage disposal. Aside from the fact that the the cookies/brownies are either blah tasting or inedible, the cookie making routine takes longer than bake-from-scratch. The procedure called for is to dump half of the mix into the mixing bowl and combine with other ingredients for recipe THEN mix in the remaining half of the mix. HUH? The time AND energy required to try to incorporate the dry mix into the already combined ingredients is enough to send me back to my measuring cups and old timey cookie recipes. The 'Double Chocolate Brownies' (page 92) are the worst. A huge mess of almost solid dough which needs a trowel to spread out into the too large pan recommended. If you want to spend too much time and come up with losers, this is the book for you.

Summary: A great book for your money
Comment: This book is loaded with simple recipes that all sound great! I have tried more than one of them and they have all come out fantastic. The cook times and everything in the book have been exactly correct. My only wish is that it had photos of the cookies inside the book instead of just the recipes. I think it's a great investment for anyone who enjoys baking... especially for the holidays!
