This perennial bestseller has been reissued in a new format to appeal to the next generation of campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Though compact so it can easily be packed along with lightweight camping gear, the book contains over 100 mouth-watering recipes, from goulash to gingerbread, and from fish fillets to farm biscuits. The author also provides such useful information as how to buy a Dutch oven, how to use it, and tips for cleaning it.

Customer Rating: Summary: okay book Comment: Bought this book hoping to get a little more info on dutch oven cooking. I agree with the others it needs a coal breakdown for temps. Some recipes gave temps so if you know the breakdown your okay.
Most of the recipes and coal breakdowns can be found on the internet anyhow.
Customer Rating: Summary: Okay but not gourmet Comment: This is an okay cook book for quick and easy campfire cooking and would probably best serve someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time preparing food during their outdoor adventure. Many of the recipes use items such as canned soup or other prepared items that you simply combine. The bread section has some great information and the desert section, alone, makes the book worth purchasing. However, if you are someone who likes to create a gourmet meal from scratch you will not find this book as appealing. A major shortcoming of the book is the lack of instructions for cooking with charcoal (how much to use and how many to place on top and underneath). This shortcoming, however, can be overcome by referring to the information that comes with most Lodge camp Dutch ovens. But, again, the problem is the fact that temperatures are not addressed in the recipes.
Customer Rating: Summary: Small cookbook Comment: I will admit to being surprised when I got this at how small the book is, but its full of info and perfect for taking camping. I agree with others, there is no instructions on how many coals to use or for placement, but once you have used a DO a few times, it all becomes second nature.
I use mine one the stove or in the oven. We don't camp often but I use my DO at least twice a week. With a recipe that needs a few hours to cook, I make it in the backyard on a charcoal BBQ'er and it works great. I have had no problems at all figuring out cook times and temps.
Customer Rating: Summary: From an intriguing Peppermint Pound Cake to Potato Soup, here's a fine pocket presentation also recommended for in-home use. Comment: Many dutch oven cookbooks on the market are weighty and daunting: not so the 4th updated edition of a near-pocket guide Dutch Oven Cooking, which is perfect for taking along and meal planning for a camping trip. It's the outdoors orientation which differentiates this from similar-sounding, home-oriented coverages, offering up dishes perfect for campfires and overnights and moving the dutch oven from indoors to outside. From an intriguing Peppermint Pound Cake to Potato Soup, here's a fine pocket presentation also recommended for in-home use.

Customer Rating: Summary: Dutch Oven Use and Care, Plus Varied Recipes Comment: This is a five-star classic, and for the price can't be beat. The author covers selection, use and maintenace of Dutch ovens, as well as providing a good mix of recipe types (fish, poultry, deserts, etc.). I especially recommend the fish and rice recipe!
