Over 400 recipes from the kitchen of Chef Brian P. McCarthy! Now that you’ve become a vegan, you’re learning lots of ways to prepare tofu, but you or someone you love is really starting to miss macaroni and cheese, turkey dinners, pumpkin pie and birthday cake. Maybe you and your family feel self-conscious (and hungry) at holidays, picnics, and parties. Or maybe just one person in the family is vegan, but you need to create meals that everyone will eat. Since the day Brian McCarthy and his wife, Karen, chose a vegan diet for their family ten years ago, Chef McCarthy has created over 400 simple vegan recipes with easy-to-find ingredients for traditional favorites like biscuits, corn bread, stews, pastas, pizzas, cakes, pies, and even eggnog. All the recipes come from the McCarthy home kitchen and have passed the test of many family meals. For individuals or families who are concerned about animals, the environment, or their health, mealtimes just got a whole lot easier.

Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic and wonderful book Comment: I found this book to be very user friendly, full of easy to prepare, yummy, tasty, nutritious recipes suitable for vegans and vegetarians. My personal favourite is the chocolate pudding. Heavenly!
Customer Rating: Summary: A SENSIBLE VEGAN COOKBOOK Comment: THE RECIPES IN THIS COOKBOOK WILL PLEASE MOST FAMILIES...THE RECIPES ARE NOT OVERLY SPICED AND THE INGREDIENTS ARE NOT EXOTIC...IN FACT, MOST (NOT ALL) OF THE INGREDIENTS CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR REGULARLY GROCERY STORE. SO FAR, I HAVE MADE THE SPAGHETTI SAUCE AND THE ASIAN NOODLES...THEY WERE VERY TASTY...AND NOT OVERPOWERING....I WANT TO TRY THE KUNG PAO, THE BREAKFAST MUFFIN RECIPES AND A NUMBER OF OTHER RECIPES...TRUE TO IT'S NAME, THIS IS A FAMILY STYLE COOKBOOK. I USED TO BE A FOOD PURISTS, INSISTING ON ONLY WHOLE GRAINS AND NO OIL. HOWEVER, I GOT TO THE PLACE WHERE I WASN'T REALLY ENJOYING MY FOOD...AND, WHEN FRIENDS WOULD COME OVER OR FAMILY FROM OUT OF TOWN VISITED...THEY WOULDN'T ENJOY MY COOKING...THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED THAT...
Customer Rating: Summary: Cookbook review Comment: This cookbook does not have pictures and I am a big visual image person. Also they suggest using a lot of "meat" substitutes and for those people who truly want to be Vegan, meatless chorizo isn't exactly appetizing. But on the plus side there is a really great recipe for Hummmus. Bottom line, if you like cookbook's with pictures of the entree's this is not for you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Where have all the healthy vegans gone??????? Comment: I am thoroughly disgusted with this book. It is filled with cups and cups of sugar, white flour, processed grains, canned food, etc. And the list of lifeless food in these recipes could go on and on. What happened to the whole foods approach to eating......maple syrup or agave nectar for sweetners, spelt flour for the white (dead) flour, whole grains (quinoa, millet, amaranth, brown rice), fresh fruits and veggies, healthy coconut oil for margarine, etc. I have noticed that there is a trend among vegan cookbooks to make the recipes as tasty as their hydrogenated counterparts. Most of these cookbooks try so hard to make their final products taste good that they forget about the nutritional punch (or lack there of) in their food. So, in essence, the vegan versions are just as unhealthy as the carnivorous versions they are trying to avoid. Ironic?!? It also hits home the message that just because you are vegan does not mean you are healthier than your meat-eating friends. Eat a diet high in white flour, white sugar, processed foods, etc. and you will meet the same fate of degenerative diseases (heart disease, arthritis, colon cancer, etc.)that plagues North Americans. I am completely embarassed for the author of this book. He claims that he has been a professional cook for 25 years and that he and his wife researched the dangers of the standard American diet. Well, they should have researched a little bit more before they published this dietary drivel. Do yourself a favour....if you value your life, avoid this book completely. Or if you have already made an ill-fated purchase of this book, recycle it at your nearest recycling depot. But don't use it. Remember taste does not necessitate good health.....taste with a healthy dollop of exceptional nutrients brings about satisfaction, as well as a radiant, revitalized body. Go for whole foods, not the fake food that lines our supermarket shelves. Your body will thank you. If you are interested in a more whole foods approach to vegan cooking, try out any of Dreena Burton's cookbooks. The flavors are fantastic and the food is nutritionally sound. Gook luck and the best of health to you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Too Basic For Me Comment: I have been vegan for over 4 years and my taste buds have advanced now. This book is extremely basic and should be titled Vegan Cooking for Dummies. Now if you new to vegan or cooking this would be good for you, but then again most things are just common sense. I did however manage to find some good recipes inside of it. So it has its ups and downs. Do I recommend this???...to the new vegan/inexperienced cook yes... to a more adavnaced vegan/cook no.
