Editorial Reviews:

The best kid-friendly recipes and guide to the gluten-free milk-free diet for ADHD and Autism. What it is. Why it works. How to do it.

The Centers for Disease Control reports significant increases in Autism and ADHD - both affecting primarily boys. The CDC estimates that 1 out of 175 children (age 4 to 17) currently have Autism (300,000). Before 1985, Autism occurred in less than 1 out of 2000. ADHD is much more common in that it affects 4.4 million U.S. children (age 4 to 17).

Common to both of these conditions is the negative impact of certain foods - especially milk products and glutens such as wheat(and to a lesser degree - soy and corn.) One of the challenges that parents face is coping with children who have picky appetites and crave the very foods that affect their behavior, focus and development. The other challenge is finding ways to get their children to eat healthy foods and improve their nutritional status.

The uniqueness of this book is that it not only provides gluten-free milk-free substitutes and recipes, it provides successful suggestions for feeding the picky eater. The authors share details about just how and why the diet works. The specialty ingredients are explained and extensive sources provided. There are also testimonials from the parents and from the children themselves.

Summary: Great book to start with
Comment: My son has ADHD and after a nightmare of a year on medication we vowed never to go down that road again. I started researching alternative and natural remedies to cure ADHD. I found a doctor who specialized in ADHD and autism. This doctor ordered food allergy tests for my son. Low and behold, my son is allergic to about 15 different foods including wheat, dairy, soy, milk, eggs, nuts and others.

Distraught and overwhelmed, this is the first book (of many - most of which I returned) that I ordered.

It has been a real eye-opener. I can't even go into all of the topics the book covers.

I have made three or four of the recipes so far and they've all been great. Last night I made Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread and WOW, it is really good! Some recipes I have to substitute ingredients because of the severity of my sons allergies (as I did in the Pumpkin Bread), but I did so without affecting the end result.

It's scary and intimidating to suddenly change your life style - especially in the kitchen. I was never much of a cook before and now I cook 3-4 meals a day from scratch! This book is a great resource for those who are timid about trying this new approach to cooking.

BTW - I've already noticed improvement in my son's behavior. We've been on this ADHD diet for about six weeks. It's worth it!

Summary: Excellent resource for all things GF/CF!!!
Comment: At first I was a little disappointed that only about half of the book is actual recipes and the other half is information, but the resoure material and the invaluable explanation of the diet has been extremely helpful! I have shared this book with everyone I know who has a child with an autism spectrum disorder and we all have LOVED it! A great find! The recipes aren't phenomenal, but my son will eat most of them.

Summary: Great for All Ages and Diets
Comment: As a culinary educator I recommend this book highly to parents who not only have children with ADHD but also for those with food allergies. I use it as a resource since it addresses all the ingredients which are usually problems for children - soy, dairy, wheat, etc. and gives great alternatives and easy recipes to satisfy all palates. Those with allergies and intolerances will surely benefit from all the tasty recipes and information in this book. As a mom, I enjoy many of the recipes with my own kids (and they don't even have allergies or ADHD!)
