Summary: "Here We Come/Walking Down the Street"
Comment: Jill Connor Browne is like the literary equivalent of the Monkees: what kind of author can't even write her own book? (with apologies to Mickey, Mike, Davey and Peter--that was merely a metaphor, so to speak; I know the guys really did play their own instruments...) I just find it hard to take that someone who spends so much time bragging about how her writing career just fell into her lap couldn't even muster enough creativity to write her own novel. And please don't blame poor Miss Gillespie--I feel the blame for this lazy concoction lies solely with Browne. The overall plot is boring; just incredibly predictable story-lines, slapped together with a few Southern expressions, some 80s references, a couple of recipes...and the word "sumbitch" gets thrown around all too often. Also, the ending of the book is downright disgusting, especially if you actually think about it for more than three seconds. I won't describe it, not because I care about giving anything away, but because it is vile. I won't say I'm not jealous, that someone has been given so much for doing so little, but again: does she have to gloat about it? Look at Browne's website, where she refuses to give out any of her recipes for free, insisting that everybody buy each one of her "books," along with all her other shoddy merchandise. This on top of the fact that her loyal fans seem to be the ones contributing all the material for her many projects anyway....while she gets the dough. Is that fair? As one other reviewer suggested, just get the book from the library. Heck, you could even photocopy all the precious, valuable recipes and hand them out to all the happy homemakers you know. Maybe together we can derail this so-called writer's career...let her stick with the parade. That at least sounds like fun, unlike this lousy excuse for a book.

Comment: This is one of my all time favorite books! Read it (or listen to it)again and again! Jill Connor Browne is one of a kind....I wish there were more writers just like her!

Summary: Love Jill, but prefer her non-fiction
Comment: I am a HUGE fan of the SPQ series- to the extent that I can quote passages and my girlfriends and I dress up as Queens every St Pats Day. The novel just didn't do it for me. Seemed like a biography, was funny in parts, but draggy in others. I remain a huge Jill Conner Browne fan, but am feeling just so-so about this one.

Summary: A good laugh and some great stories
Comment: This book is just plain fun to read and made me laugh out loud several times, much to the dismay of my roomies. Following the lives of a group of friends, you see how each one grows and changes over the course of their lives and find yourself entangled in their stories. It's easy to connect with the characters and sometimes even learn from them. Plus you get some genuine southern recipes at the end.

Summary: A Light Summer Read
Comment: Although I didn't have any laugh-out-loud moments reading this book, I did experience a few chuckles and learned a new term for a bad boss - bosshole. Thankfully I don't currently have use for the term. It doesn't require following complicated story lines so it's a good summer book. The story of high school friendships weathering all the complications of life is close to my heart. It's a reminder that true friendships endure marriages, divorces, bad choices, distance, and in the end true friends are by your side.
Ladies - I recommend this book for all your girlfriends as a reminder of how important they are in your life.
